Prior to entering my Kenpo Form pages I would like share with my fellow Kenpoists that there is no " SINGLE WAY" method of performing any of these Kenpo Forms. In all my 29 years in Kenpo Karate I don't know how many times I have heard "That's not the way Parker did it" or " Your not doing it the "original way" or perhaps ,and my favorite, "That's not the way Parker Taught it". I have been fortunate enough to have been taught by only First Generation Black Belts. Mr. Yosh "Jimmy" Furuya, Mr. Roger Meadows and Mr. Frank Trejo. I have reviewed the forms with instructors like Mr. Lee Wedlake and Mr. Huk Planas. I have trained in depth with Mr. Planas. I have many tapes of Mr. Parker teaching almost every Form to his Senior Black Belts in class. I have traveled the world talking to Kenpoist and recording many Black Belts doing Forms 1-6. And guess what? Everyone states that their way is the "CORRECT" way and that that is the way Mr. Parker taught it to them. And guess what else? They are all correct!! How can all these Black Belts be correct? Well as I researched these claims , I found that Mr. Parker taught each area or branch a slightly different way of doing Kenpo Forms. He did this to identify where people learned their Kenpo Forms from. Smart move! Subtle differences that DID NOT change the essence of the Forms. The order of the techniques and the angles remained the same with everyone Mr. Parker taught. The only differences is that a hand strike was different or perhaps a transitional foot maneuver, but the overall outcome was the SAME!!
So get off the" Mine is better than yours " routine and perfect what it is that YOU have learned. All basic principles and concepts are the same and can be applied with no matter what it is that you are doing!!
Many Black Belts are putting in their subtle signatures moves themselves to identify their school and roots. This is not a bad thing as long as THE ESSENCE of the Form remains the same.
But MANY have CHANGED the Original Form's foundation by changing the order, or adding techniques and angles of attack that were not there before. Many are CALLING THEM by their original names. (Long1, Short 2 etc...) To change the form and its content is well within the right of the Practitioner, but the identity of the form should be changed as well and NOT passed on as an Original Kenpo Form. The Evolution of Kenpo is a must. Mr. Parker changed and evolved his art all the time. In my opinion, I feel that if Mr. Parker were still alive, the Art of Kenpo Karate would be very different. It would have evolved tremendously. However, I feel that the forms would have remained the same to protect and preserve the foundations of his Art. The techniques would have changed, but not the forms.
Passing it off as an Original Kenpo Form is NOT within the acceptable boundaries of signature moves or style. In my opinion go ahead and change the forms that's O.K., but don't call them Ed Parker's Original Kenpo Forms and use the Original names!
Mr. Parker changed things himself all the time. "An ever changing evolution of the Arts." he called it. But Kenpo Forms are the Foundation of Kenpo Karate. Before the individually named techniques were around the"old timers" learned the techniques from the the forms. That is all they had!! That was the "original Kenpo Karate"
So keep an open mind and apply these pages to what it is that YOU have learned!!
